There’s a surprising abundance of free online resources for students. Listed are the resources that are useful in high school, from word processors to presentation tools to productivity boosters.
Clouds
- Some services contain many resources, like presentation tools, spreadsheets, and word processors, under one umbrella. These require an account or a download.
- Google Drive is an integrated platform with many services that allows easy collaboration and sharing between others with an account.
- Microsoft 365 may be free for students, depending on your school system.
- Libre Office is a Microsoft alternative.
- Open Office is another Microsoft alternative.
Document / Presentation
- Google Docs is a browser word processor. It’s useful for writing assignments partially completed at home, because progress is automatically saved across devices. Many students report that Google Docs has replaced easily lost flash drives.
- DarkRoom is a downloadable, distraction-free writing software. This stripped-down word processor offers a wholly different experience than the traditional, and is worth a try if you’re looking for a change.
- Prezi uses motion and zoom to spice up any presentation. It’s a great way to make your presentation stand out, but collaborators must make their own accounts. Thus, it may be more appropriate for solo projects. Additionally, exporting a Prezi is not as intuitive as other, similar platforms.
- Google Slides is under the Google umbrella. Because Google accounts are common, this is a great option for group projects.
- Microsoft PowerPoint Online might be a service your school system provides for free.
Study Tools
- Quizlet. This site gives you the freedom to create your own sets of flashcards, search for others’ sets, and engage in nifty study exercises. It’s great if you have a series of terms to memorize. Also, it allows you to set study reminders for yourself.
- Khan Academy offers helpful video tutoring in many subjects. Khan Academy is best for science and math subjects.
- Kahoot! Is a game-based learning tool. You can create your own question sets and play them in groups. Though you might be most familiar with Kahoot! played in classrooms, it has definite potential for smaller-scale study sessions.
- Albert.io is a website that offers practice questions for standardized test prep, AP Exams, SAT Subject Tests, high school classes, and more. Some questions require payment, but there are several free practice materials too.
Miscellaneous
- Easybib is a bibliography generator. It allows you to paste a link, and generates a citation in the form of your choice (MLA, APA or Chicago). It’s very user-friendly and even alphabetizes your list of citations.
- Todoist generates to-do lists. It may help you stay on-task and efficient.
- Sleepytime helps calculate when your optimal wake-up time is based on your sleep cycles. If you find yourself always waking up exhausted no matter how many hours you’ve slept, Sleepytime is worth a try.
- Desmos is an online graphing calculator. If you don’t own a graphing calculator, this might help with math homework, though your teachers won’t let you use it on a test.
- Wolfram Alpha is a computational knowledge engine. Instead of returning webpages that might contain the answer to a searched question, like a search engine might, it directly computes the answer. You may find this useful for a tricky algebra problem, for example.
- Google Sheets is an online spreadsheet. This is perfect for group projects because spreadsheets can be so easily shared and collaborated upon.
